Conflict
- The narrator gets expelled from school and is sent to Harlem- This sends the narrator to a different section of the country where he is exposed to new aspects of culture. He acquires a job, only to his dismay it is not an actual job, but to serve more as a test subject. He has not found his place in society due to society’s prejudice in skin, regardless of what he has to offer.
- The Narrator meets Jack of the Brotherhood- While superficially, the narrator thinks the Brotherhood is about advocating for social reform, he is falling to the white man’s assimilation. Brother Jack takes in the narrator in order to get his message to the world through the mouth of a young African American. The narrator is also not fully aware of what his message is, or who he is, and gets lost in the world of advocating for change.
